Fears & Phobias

Is your fear or phobia stopping you from living a normal life, going out and meeting new people, taking holidays, trying new experiences?  Do you find yourself avoiding certain situations or places?

Fear is a natural and healthy response to danger.  When we find ourselves faced with any kind of danger or threat, our natural instinct is to survive and our brain goes into fight or flight response, we experience rapid heartbeart, sweating, and possibly an upset stomach.

Phobias are irrational fears of certain objects, situations or places and they can be specific or non-specific.  When someone is faced with a phobia, they experience an overwhelming and debilitating sense of fear and anxiety, often resulting in a panic attack.

Types of phobis:

There are many different types of phobias, some involving animals such as snakes, spiders or dogs.  Some phobias are environmental such as heights, bacteria or open water. Phobias linked to the body can include needles, having injections, fear of vomiting or the sight of blood.  Situational phobias include fear of flying, fear of hospitals or visiting the dentist.

It is also quite common for people to have phobias of objects such as buttons or balloons, while others may have a fear of particular food items.

Two of the most common complex phobias are Agoraphobia and Social phobia:

Agoraphobia is when someone feels anxious in certain places or situations, perhaps busy crowded places or travelling on public transport.

Social phobia (Social Anxiety disorder) is when someone cannot cope in social situations which require interaction with others. This may include fear of public speaking or just fear of saying the wrong thing to someone which may cause embarrassment and blushing. In some cases, this can cause people to avoid socialising altogether, which can make them feel isolated and depressed.
