Coping With Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a condition characterised by sound in the ears, which may include buzzing, ringing, humming, hissing or whistling and either one or both ears may be affected. These sounds may be constant or intermittent and can also vary in volume from person to person.

Tinnitus is a fairly common condition and 1 in 10 people will experience mild symptoms at some point in their lives, while others suffer from the very distressing high pitched daily ringing or whistling which can sometimes be loud enough to drown out everyday sounds around them.

When tinnitus is loud and constant, it can cause the sufferer a great deal of distress, affecting concentration levels at work or whilst driving, it can cause other problems too such as insomnia which can often lead to depression.

Having to live with loud and continuous tinnitus can cause the sufferer a great deal of psychological stress, feelings of frustration, anxiety, fear and anger.  Tinnitus is not caused through stress but high levels of stress can most definitely exacerbate the condition.  If you suffer from loud and persistent tinnitus, then it is always wise to check with your GP first to rule out any possible contributing factors such as thyroid problems, head injury, anaemia, diabetes, ear blockage or infection. It could be caused by hearing loss, particularly in older people or in some cases younger people who regularly listen to very loud music.

Solution focused hypnotherapy cannot cure your tinnitus, but it can help to improve it, making your day to day life more manageable, using deep relaxation to reduce your stress and anxiety levels, helping you to feel calmer and more in control.  You will be given an MP3 recording to listen to each night before sleep to help you relax further and improve quality of sleep.
